Cefa-Safe is an intramammary antibiotic infusion supplied as a single dose 10mL syringe containing 300mg cephapirin as long-acting benzathine salt. Cephapirin is an antibiotic of the beta-lactam group of cephalosporins, and is active against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative organisms. Uses
Cefa-Safe is to be used at drying off, immediately after the last milking of the lactation for treatment of subclinical mastitis and prevention of mastitis caused by bacteria sensitive to cephapirin in cows during the dry period. Administration must not be delayed. Use in conjunction with teat spraying and proper management of the cow during the drying off period. How it works
Cefa-Safe is an intermediate dry cow therapy that provides the excellent cure rates of cephalosporin therapy within a shorter dry period. Cefa-Safe contains cephapirin, a cephalosporin antibiotic that has an excellent spectrum of activity against mastitis pathogens: S. aureus (including penicillin resistant organisms), Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CNS), Streptococci, and E. coli. Cefa-Safe dry cow therapy delivers the excellent cure rates achieved with cephalosporin dry cow therapy, but with a profile that provides a shorter withhold period. This offers an alternative to long-acting cephalosporins (e.g. Cepravin) in situations where: there is a short dry period. a long-acting dry cow therapy is used for the herd, but there are also some early-calving cows. there is a desire to reduce the potential for positive inhibitory substances tests in colostrum. there is an indication for a short-acting product in combination with non-antibiotic teat sealant.
Dual Tip insertion
The cap of the Cefa-Safe syringe can be partially or fully removed allowing either partial or full insertion of the syringe nozzle. Studies indicate that partial insertion can reduce the chance of introducing infection or damaging the teat canal. Prescription Animal Remedies (P.A.R.) Class I.
